Setting Up Starlink!

My Starlink finally arrived! Pro tip: it is expensive to ship things into Canada so you can ship to UPS locations right across the border and pick up your package there without having to pay import tax to Canada.

I found a UPS right across the border in Saulte Saint Marie, crossed the border during lunch and headed back into Canada. The border here is over a bridge so there was a $4 USD toll to cross but I was out and back in no time. Crossing the border really isn’t that scary! Just make sure you have your passport and use the CanAm app to put in your information (passport, travel plans, vaccine info) and it takes no time.

Later that day, I drove to a beautiful camp spot right on the water. There was absolutely zero cell service at the spot (a perfect place to test the connection). It was very easy to set up. Plug in the router, plug in the receiver and set the the receiver in an open area, download the Starlink app and let it do its thing. Within about 10 minutes the Starlink receiver had positioned itself to receive the best satellite signal and was up and running. I was able to do all my video calls, upload and download files, watch Netflix.

I’ve read a lot of reviews about how the receiver won’t work if you it cannot see the sky clearly which made me wonder how much clear sky is “enough”. The camp spot I was in had trees all around but I did have a small parking lot’s worth of clear sky access.

Will keep you posted on how it works over time.
